Global Tectonics

An outstanding and consequential issue surrounding studies of Venus geology and geophysics is the question of the kinematics and dynamics of Venus' global tectonics. Without the overarching framework of a paradigm akin to plate tectonics, it is often difficult to constrain models, or to place explanations of local tectonics into their proper global context. Yet, if the history of terrestrial geological work over the past three decades is any indication, the utility of such a paradigm is apparent. Data from Magellan and other spacecraft have made clear some of the outlines of a tectonic paradigm for Venus; other parts remain obscure. In this section I outline some of the more recent attempts to understand the formation and deformation of the surface of Venus and the linkage between the currently strong lithospheric layer and the convecting interior.
