Greenhouse Gases

The databases of spectral parameters of atmospheric gases mentioned previously continue to be significantly revised, especially absorptions by ozone and methane. Important contributions to estimating the climate forcing by HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and HFC (hydrofluorocarbons) are presented by Clerbaux et al. [1993]. Other important studies are those of Rind and Lacis [1993], and Shi and Fan [1992].

The effect of ozone changes on radiative forcing has received some attention recently with the studies of Schwarzkopf and Ramaswamy [1993], Ramaswamy et al. [1992], Wang et al. [1993], Shine [1993] and Karol [1993] and by an intercomparison exercise of Shine et al. [1995]. Depletion of stratospheric ozone poses a fascinating problem in estimating the attendant climate forcing because of its absorption of both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared radiation.
