New AGU Officers Assume Duties

WASHINGTON – Tim Killeen, Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, took office 1 July as President of the American Geophysical Union for a two-year term. John Orcutt, who was president 2004–2006, remains on the AGU Council as Past President. Other Union-wide officials and the Presidents-Elect of AGU’s 11 scientific sections, who were elected earlier this year, join the Council. The previous Presidents-Elect have moved up to the presidency of their respective sections.

The members of the AGU Council are the six Union officers, eleven Section Presidents, and eleven Section Presidents-Elect. The Council sets overall Union policies, authorizes major changes in programs, and in general attends to the scientific and organizational health of AGU. All Council members are elected, with the exception of the Executive Director, who serves ex officio.
